Photograph: The Castle

Incubation is a vital part of my process. I made this photograph ten years ago but am only now getting around to seeing and printing it with fresh eyes and fresh mind. If there are any downsides to experiential photography - images borne of experience, most often remarkable and exciting ones - is that the images can often be weighted by the thrill of the experience. The outing was great, so the images must be good! It sounds plausible in theory, in practice it is not.Ten years is a long time - a significant piece of a normal human life. If I can evolve and mature as an artist, as a human, yet the image still feels powerful to me a decade after I made it, it's likely a keeper, one that I can hang and live with on my wall for a very long time. This is my personal arbiter for the highest evocative quality. Can I stare at this print, day after day, year after year?

Please consider joining me, Colleen Miniuk, Chuck Kimmerle, Charlotte Gibb, David Kingham, Jennifer Renwick, Bruce Hucko, and Guy Tal for the 2025 Moab Photography Symposium - eight instructors and four outstanding days of workshops, presentations, great fun, and superb camaraderie, September 25-28, 2025, in beautiful Moab, Utah. See you there!
